/ THE SILENCE OF THE CAVE /
ARTWORK BY: Helmi Hardian & Debrina Tedja
WAFT-LAB was invited to join in The 8th Art to community Project that held by Art Centre Silpakorn University. The title of this project is Metro Sapiens: The Dialogue in the Cave, At Chom Phon Cave, Chombung District, Ratchaburi – Thailand. It aims to unite local artist, contemporary art artist, Asian artist, and interested people to create the dialogue in the prehistoric space. To respond the challenge, WAFT-LAB creates an artwork named The Silence of The Cave.
SOUNDSCAPE
The cave is silence, still, the component of cave’s ecosystem interacting each other. Because they interdependence each other, either biotic (animal, plant, microbes) or abiotic (water, soil, air, and lights). Then every change occurs, it would affect on other components.
Through this interaction, they are trying to figure out the Homeostasis, a system that regulates its internal environment and tends to maintain a stable, relatively constant condition. They are seeking for tolerate range, to adapt this condition and creating homeostasis. Component's interaction, for instance: light intensity, wind blowing, temperature, humidity, and moisture changes, couldn’t be realized because of the senses limitations and man’s insensitivity.

Component's interaction, for instance: light intensity, wind blowing, temperature, humidity, and moisture changes, couldn’t be realized because of the senses limitations and man’s insensitivity.
Because of these ideas, we intended to present the interaction in the cave, which can be captured by human senses, especially sight & hearing senses, then crafting spaces for dialogue. The artwork captured the value of humidity and temperature through sensors and converted the numeric data into sound. It then captured this sound also any other sound inside the cave and modified it into visual form in the monitor. The artwork summarized each interaction and dialogue in the cave, either the spoken or not.
On the last day of this project, two of WAFT-LAB representatives, Helmi Hardian and Debrina Tedja, do a presentation of WAFT-LAB activities and agendas. Then they conduct a pure data workshop for students of Media Art, Silpakorn University.
